Driving anxiety can make you feel trapped.
It stops you from being spontaneous and just getting in your car and driving. It’s inconvenient.
It’s so time-consuming. You either need to find alternative travel or use the back roads. It’s annoying.
It knocks your confidence and you start to believe that things will never get better. It’s demoralising.
It makes you feel inadequate and you worry about being judged by others. It’s frustrating.
It stops you from applying for new working opportunities outside your local area. It’s restrictive.
You have to make up excuses as to why you can’t give friends or colleagues lifts. It’s embarassing.
Fear of driving on the motorway
You can read the whole article, or you might prefer to use the links below to skip to the most relevant parts for you.
What is the fear of motorway driving?
As the name suggests, the fear of motorway driving is an anxiety disorder where individuals experience intense fear, anxiety, or panic at the thought of driving on motorways or major roads.
Like many anxiety disorders, the impact the condition can have on the individual can vary considerably. At its most severe, it can prevent people from traveling on motorways altogether; for some, it may mean they feel slight anxiety while driving.
If you feel scared driving on a motorway, you are certainly not alone. A survey conducted by the AA revealed that as many as 1 in 7 drivers had some anxiety related to motorway driving.
What causes my fear of driving on the motorway?
There are numerous reasons why you may currently be feeling anxiety driving on a motorway, these can often be related to a negative experience you may have had in the past or linked to your perceived lack of driving experience.
A fear of driving on the motorway though is often a result of an existing phobia. For example, if you suffer from a fear of heights (acrophobia), you will likely feel anxious when driving on unfamiliar motorways as you may need to cross a bridge at some point.
Agoraphobia may mean that you panic as you reach the top of a hill and see a wide open space in front of you with no obvious means of escape.
You may experience a similar feeling of panic if you fear enclosed spaces (claustrophobia), as you may need to travel through a tunnel or pull out into the middle lane and experience traffic moving on either side of you.
While it’s possible to gain motorway driving experience with an approved DVLA instructor, the lack of regular practice can leave drivers feeling nervous about driving on motorways. This anxiety isn’t limited to new drivers; even experienced drivers can feel scared driving on motorways. The high speeds and complex navigation required on motorways can make the experience particularly daunting.
Your overall level of stress and anxiety can significantly contribute to your fear of motorway driving. Higher stress levels increase the likelihood of developing new phobias, including motorway anxiety disorder.
Psychological factors can also intensify the fear of driving on the motorway, such as the fear of losing control. This fear can create a sense of helplessness and vulnerability, compounded by fast-moving traffic and limited opportunities to pull over. It can be perceived that a mistake on the motorway could lead to severe consequences, which increases the fear of losing control of the vehicle.
The higher speeds on motorways can be intimidating, requiring quicker reactions and heightened awareness, which can overwhelm nervous or inexperienced drivers. Traveling at high speeds is often associated with greater risk, leading to increased nervousness about potential accidents.
What are some of the most common triggers?
The fear of motorway driving can be triggered by several situations that induce stress and anxiety. These are specific to motorway driving, as the situations will rarely be encountered when driving on minor roads.
Common triggers include: joining or merging onto the motorway, flyovers, tunnels, driving at high speed, needing to maintain control, fear of causing an accident, changing lanes, complex manoeuvres at speed, and a fear of missing exits.
Do I have motorway driving anxiety or a phobia?
Driving anxiety is an umbrella term that refers to any type of anxiety that is brought on as a direct result of driving or being a passenger in a car, or even thinking about doing so. This can include a motorway driving phobia.
What is a motorway driving phobia?
A phobia can be thought of as a distinct type of anxiety. A driving phobia can be described as a persistent extreme, irrational, overwhelming, or debilitating fear of driving.
Why has my motorway phobia developed?
Your motorway driving phobia could have developed in a number of ways. Perhaps you were involved in an accident as either a driver or a passenger. Now, when you drive or even think about driving, your brain triggers your fight/flight/freeze response, which floods your body with stress hormones, putting you on red alert. Now, every time you drive on a motorway, you feel anxious and as a result, your phobia strengthens.
Perhaps when you were a child, one or both of your parents became anxious when driving on a motorway. Because of their reaction to driving, you learned that motorways were unsafe and potentially deadly. Your brain then developed a phobia of motorway driving to keep you safe from this imagined threat.
Phobias can also develop unconsciously entirely through imagination. There doesn’t need to be any logical reason for your phobia of motorway driving to have developed. You can have been a happy, confident driver for decades and suddenly develop a driving phobia linked to motorways. This is especially common for both perimenopausal and menopausal women.
It’s quite common for a driving phobia to develop from initially just feeling nervous about driving on a motorway. In the days, weeks, or even months following a stressful driving experience, you may find yourself replaying the event in your mind. This overthinking can amplify the sense of danger, causing your brain to perceive driving on the motorway as a greater threat than it is. Over time, these heightened fears can become ingrained, leading to the development of a phobia of motorway driving.
Panic attack while motorway driving
A panic attack often occurs due to the cumulative build-up of stress. If you are already an unconfident or anxious driver, you are more likely to experience a panic attack while driving compared to those who are not.
A panic attack could have occurred at any point during your day, but because it happened while you were driving on the motorway, your brain links the two events. This association can lead to the development of a phobia.
Panic attacks feel more intense and frightening when driving at high speeds because there appears to be no escape, so you are unable to fulfill your natural reaction to flee. You must also try to maintain control of your vehicle to avoid causing an accident, which can heighten the fear.
Sudden fear of motorway driving.
It’s challenging to pinpoint the exact cause of your sudden fear of motorway driving. If you experienced a panic attack while on the motorway, your brain might be triggering your fight, flight, or freeze response each time you’re in that situation again, as a way to protect you.
The high speeds and the skill required to navigate in fast-moving traffic can intensify your anxiety. If you were already dealing with stress and anxiety before your trip, motorway driving could have been the catalyst that pushed you over the edge.
Each time you drive and feel anxious, it reinforces the belief in your subconscious mind that motorway driving is dangerous and frightening. This creates a cycle where the fear becomes more deeply ingrained. The more you experience anxiety on the motorway, the stronger this belief grows, trapping you in a vicious circle.
Over time, your mind begins to associate motorway driving with fear automatically, making it increasingly difficult to break free from the anxiety. This cycle perpetuates itself, making each subsequent drive more daunting than the last.
What are the symptoms of motorway driving anxiety?
When you experience driving anxiety, your mind and body will react in several ways. This will mean you may experience some of the following symptoms: overthinking, increased heart rate, sweaty hands, stomach cramps, chest pain, trouble regulating your breathing, feeling on edge, feeling hot or cold, tingly skin, a dry mouth, shortness of breath, or feeling faint.
A fear of motorway driving is holding me back. When is it time to look for help?
Many people manage to live with their fear of motorway driving by inventing and implementing a variety of coping strategies. You might be handling your anxiety by completely avoiding major roads or only travelling on them during less busy times.
For many people, the need to find a more permanent solution only comes when they realise the debilitating effect their driving anxiety is having on their lives. Perhaps it is stopping you from applying for a dream job, or maybe you want to move to a different part of the country, but you know you won’t feel confident driving in a new location.
Whatever your reasons, help is available.
Has fear become the handbrake on your life, shrinking your world, limiting your choices and making driving feel like a battle?
But here’s the truth: you’re not broken. You’re simply running an old pattern and patterns can change

Why have I developed driving anxiety?
Your brain thinks it’s protecting you, even when it isn’t.
Driving anxiety doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you. It simply means your brain has linked driving with danger, and now it’s trying to keep you safe, even when it no longer needs to.
This may have started after experiencing or witnessing a car accident, or following a panic attack that happened while you were driving. For some people, it stems from growing up around anxious drivers, or imagining something going wrong and emotionally responding as if it already had.
In other cases, hormonal changes, particularly during perimenopause, can heighten sensitivity and make multitasking activities like driving feel overstimulating or unsafe.
The truth is, the original cause often doesn’t matter. You don’t need to remember when or why it started to overcome it
What matters is this: your brain created the fear and with the right guidance, it can unlearn it too.
“I feel so much better and can’t thank Ian enough” – Angela
What if I’m confident in other parts of my life, but driving feels completely different?
That’s actually one of the most common things we hear.
Many of our clients are successful, capable, and confident, until it comes to driving. That mismatch can feel frustrating, even embarrassing, because it doesn’t fit with who you know yourself to be.
The good news? It’s not a reflection of you as a person. It’s simply a learned pattern in the subconscious and patterns can be unlearned. The C.A.L.M.S. Method Signature System is designed to bring driving back in line with the confident person you already are, so this one part of life stops feeling out of place.
“It also helped other areas of my life, lifting the emotional weight I had carried for years.” – Chris
What if I don’t feel ready, or worry I won’t be able to do it?
Almost everyone has that thought at the beginning.
The truth is, waiting doesn’t make it easier; it usually intensifies the fear. The longer it’s left, the more it starts to dictate where you can and can’t drive, shrinking your freedom and making it harder to take the first step.
There’s never really a ‘perfect’ time, a bit like having children: if you waited for the perfect moment, you’d never do it at all, and you’d miss out on all the joy that comes with parenthood.
The good news is, you don’t need to rely on willpower or self-belief to get started; you only need to trust us to guide the process. The C.A.L.M.S. Method Signature System is designed to do the heavy lifting for you. With the right support, clients quickly discover that change is easier than they imagined. Nearly all of them say, ‘I wish I’d started sooner.
