Driving anxiety can make you feel trapped.

It stops you from being spontaneous and just getting in your car and driving. It’s inconvenient.

It’s so time-consuming. You either need to find alternative travel or use the back roads. It’s annoying.

It knocks your confidence and you start to believe that things will never get better. It’s demoralising.

It makes you feel inadequate and you worry about being judged by others. It’s frustrating.

It stops you from applying for new working opportunities outside your local area. It’s restrictive.

You have to make up excuses as to why you can’t give friends or colleagues lifts. It’s embarassing.

Driving anxiety is ruining my life, what is driving anxiety?

Crafting a specific definition for driving anxiety is quite difficult as it affects people in different ways. For some, their anxiety over driving may stop them from driving on busy, unfamiliar roads, whereas for others, it may stop them from getting behind the wheel altogether.

Some may find they can drive on all types of roads during the day, but they don’t have the confidence to drive at night. Others feel confident to drive on all roads in all conditions as long as they are close to home.

In a broad sense, driving anxiety could be described as a fear or irrational response that happens when travelling or even thinking about travelling in a vehicle.

Having anxiety over driving is very common; a report commissioned by the insurance group Aviva concluded that more than a third of motorists feel anxious behind the wheel, with 43% of that group stating that nerves affected their ability to drive. That means that in roughly 1 in 7 of the people surveyed, anxiety negatively affected their ability to drive.

What are the different causes of driving anxiety?

Driving anxiety is often not directly related to the act of driving itself. For example, if you have a fear of heights, you might experience anxiety when driving on motorways due to the possibility of crossing a bridge. Similarly, a fear of enclosed spaces could make driving through tunnels or navigating heavy traffic feel overwhelming, as you may feel trapped. On the other hand, if you are uncomfortable with wide open spaces, you might experience panic when reaching the top of a hill and seeing vast landscapes stretching out around you.

Generally, people will develop anxiety over driving (amaxophobia) as a result of one of the following reasons:

Do I have driving anxiety or a driving phobia?

Driving anxiety is an umbrella term that refers to any type of anxiety that is brought on as a direct result of driving or being a passenger in a car, or even thinking about doing so. This can include a phobia.

What is a driving phobia?

A phobia can be thought of as a distinct type of anxiety. A driving phobia can be described as a persistent extreme, irrational, overwhelming, or debilitating fear of driving.

How do I know if I have a driving phobia?

Determining if you have a phobia can sometimes be unclear, as some individuals may not perceive their fears as severe enough to qualify as a phobia. Rather than solely associating a phobia with extreme terror, it’s often more useful to think of it as an irrational fear.

One way to gauge whether your fear aligns with a phobia is by comparing your feelings to those of your peers. If your family and friends don’t share the same level of apprehension towards the issue, it may suggest that your fear is disproportionate or irrational.

However, the label of having a phobia isn’t the critical factor. What truly matters is whether your fear impedes your ability to be independent and live the way you want.

Why has my driving phobia developed?

Perhaps you were involved in an accident as either a driver or a passenger. Now, when you drive or even think about driving, your brain triggers your fight/flight/freeze response, which floods your body with stress hormones, putting you on red alert. Now every time you drive, you feel anxious and as a result, your phobia strengthens.

Perhaps when you were a child, one or both of your parents were anxious drivers. Because of their reaction to driving you learned that it was unsafe and potentially dangerous. Your brain then developed a phobia to keep you safe from this imagined threat.

Phobias can also develop unconsciously entirely through imagination. There doesn’t need to be any logical reason for your driving phobia to have developed. You can have been a happy, confident driver for decades and suddenly develop a driving phobia.

This is especially common for both perimenopausal and menopausal women.

What are the symptoms of driving anxiety?

When you experience driving anxiety, your mind and body will react in several ways, including overthinking, sweaty hands, stomach cramps, feeling on edge or hot or cold, tingly skin, a dry mouth, shortness of breath, or feeling faint.

Driving anxiety is ruining my life. Why can’t I control it?

When your driving anxiety is keeping you feeling trapped, it can be hard to imagine that your brain is trying to help.

Your subconscious mind (of which you have no control) has viewed driving as a threat and so is activating your fight/ flight/ freeze response to try and keep you safe.

Does stress affect driving anxiety?

The effect of your driving anxiety will be magnified by the amount of daily stress in your life. If you regularly face high levels of stress, your driving anxiety is likely to worsen. High levels of stress also increase the chances of you developing other phobias.

Does driving anxiety go away on it’s own?

If your driving anxiety is severe it’s highly unlikely to disappear on its own. Your driving anxiety is serving a purpose. However, this doesn’t mean you can’t reduce its impact or that you have to live with it permanently.

There are several ways that you can help to lower its negative effects and there is help available to you to enable you to overcome it permanently.

How can I manage my driving anxiety?

If you find yourself becoming anxious when you are driving there are several self-help techniques that you can use to try and stop your level of anxiety from increasing.

Rectangular breathing

Using particular breathing patterns can help you reduce the severity of your symptoms so you can feel calmer and more in control.

Rectangular breathing simply involves breathing out for longer than you breathe in. Several different ratios could be adopted but it’s probably easier if you just remember to breathe out for twice as long as you breathe in.

For example, you could breathe in through your NOSE for a count of 4 and then breathe out calmly through your MOUTH for a count of 8. Continue to do this for around 2 to 3 minutes or until you feel calmer.

5-4-3-2-1

This is an exercise that can help you to keep calm when driving. It can help you to feel grounded and to keep your mind occupied so it doesn’t focus on your driving anxiety. You can use it at any time but it can work well when you start to feel anxiety creeping up on you

Then carry on doing the same for 4,3,2, then 1 thing. It is a great exercise to help take your mental focus away from your driving anxiety.

Driving anxiety is ruining my life. When is it time to look for help?

Many people manage to live with their driving anxiety by implementing coping strategies. You might be handling your driving anxiety by choosing familiar routes or travelling on major roads during less busy times.

For many people, the need to find a more permanent solution only comes when they realise the debilitating effect their driving anxiety is having on their lives. Perhaps it is stopping you from applying for a dream job, or maybe you want to move to a different part of the country, but you know you won’t feel confident driving in a new location.

Whatever your reasons for feeling that driving anxiety is ruining your life, there is help available for you.

Still unsure? Here’s what most people ask us.

Will it really work for me?

That’s the most common question we hear, especially from individuals who have struggled for years.

If you’ve been living with driving anxiety for a while, it’s completely natural to wonder if anything will truly make a difference. Many of our clients felt exactly the same way.

But here’s what they discovered: Your brain created the fear.
Which means, with the right approach, it can also unlearn it.

This isn’t a one-size-fits-all course or a quick fix. The C.A.L.M.S Method Signature System is a personalised process that works with how your mind formed the fear, and gently unwires it at the root.

You don’t need to believe in hypnotherapy, and you don’t need to “feel ready”. You just need to be willing to take that first step. We’ll guide you the rest of the way.

Most of our clients are capable, high-functioning people. They’ve just been living with fear longer than they needed to.
Choosing to face that fear isn’t weakness. It’s one of the most powerful things you can do.

This isn’t about learning how to manage your anxiety; it’s about helping your mind realise it no longer needs to be afraid.

“I cannot believe what a difference just 6 sessions of hypnotherapy has made” – Chris

The C.A.L.M.S Method Signature System is a proven, personalised approach designed specifically for driving anxiety. Each step addresses a different aspect of the problem, from the subconscious triggers behind the fear to the physical symptoms that appear when you drive.

It’s not a one-size-fits-all programme. We tailor the process to your unique experiences, using advanced techniques like hypnotherapy, NLP, and Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT). You won’t just learn how to cope, you’ll retrain how your mind and body respond to driving altogether.

Most clients notice shifts within the first few sessions. And by the end of the 90 days, they’re calmly doing journeys they never thought possible.

“Ian went above and beyond to help me overcome my fear and anxiety associated with driving” – Clare

With many approaches, you might get a handful of sessions and then you’re left to face it all on your own. For most people, that’s when old fears slowly creep back in, because the root cause was never fully addressed, and there’s no one there to guide you when life throws a challenge your way.

The C.A.L.M.S Method Signature System is different. We work at the source of the problem to create lasting change and we don’t disappear the moment your initial sessions end. You’ll have three months of structured, personalised support during the programme, with the opportunity to access a further nine months of complimentary after‑care support so you stay confident, resilient, and in control for the long haul.

In other words, you’re not just getting therapy, you’re getting up to a year of expert guidance, designed to make sure your progress sticks for life.

“I feel like a weight has been lifted from me.” – Dan

Your brain thinks it’s protecting you, even when it isn’t.

Driving anxiety doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with you. It simply means your brain has linked driving with danger, and now it’s trying to keep you safe, even when it no longer needs to.

This may have started after experiencing or witnessing a car accident, or following a panic attack that happened while you were driving. For some people, it stems from growing up around anxious drivers, or imagining something going wrong and emotionally responding as if it already had.

In other cases, hormonal changes, particularly during perimenopause, can heighten sensitivity and make multitasking activities like driving feel overstimulating or unsafe.

The truth is, the original cause often doesn’t matter. You don’t need to remember when or why it started to overcome it

What matters is this: your brain created the fear and with the right guidance, it can unlearn it too.

“I feel so much better and can’t thank Ian enough” – Angela

That’s actually one of the most common things we hear.

Many of our clients are successful, capable, and confident, until it comes to driving. That mismatch can feel frustrating, even embarrassing, because it doesn’t fit with who you know yourself to be.

The good news? It’s not a reflection of you as a person. It’s simply a learned pattern in the subconscious and patterns can be unlearned. The C.A.L.M.S. Method Signature System is designed to bring driving back in line with the confident person you already are, so this one part of life stops feeling out of place.

“It also helped other areas of my life, lifting the emotional weight I had carried for years.” – Chris

Almost everyone has that thought at the beginning.

The truth is, waiting doesn’t make it easier; it usually intensifies the fear. The longer it’s left, the more it starts to dictate where you can and can’t drive, shrinking your freedom and making it harder to take the first step.

There’s never really a ‘perfect’ time, a bit like having children: if you waited for the perfect moment, you’d never do it at all, and you’d miss out on all the joy that comes with parenthood.

The good news is, you don’t need to rely on willpower or self-belief to get started; you only need to trust us to guide the process. The C.A.L.M.S. Method Signature System is designed to do the heavy lifting for you. With the right support, clients quickly discover that change is easier than they imagined. Nearly all of them say, ‘I wish I’d started sooner.

“Each session has continued to help me build my confidence and help me discover the freedom and enjoyment of driving.” – Bobby Digital

You’re not alone, even though it may feel like it. Every week, we help people who thought they were the only ones.

Real people. Real transformations. Real freedom.

After: Drives long journeys with ease and no longer plans life around avoidance.

“I suffered with severe driving anxiety after a car accident and avoided driving for years. I relied on trains and eventually moved abroad just to sidestep getting behind the wheel. When I came back to the UK, the fear hit me hard, even thinking about driving triggered panic. Ian helped me uncover the deeper causes of my anxiety and guided me through them with care and patience. I now drive confidently, including long journeys, and I finally feel like myself again, free, calm, and in control.”

ERIN ALPHONSO

“Even seeing a motorway on screen used to trigger panic. Now I drive with calm confidence.”

Before: Avoided highways for 3 years, even seeing one in a film triggered anxiety.

After: Drives comfortably again, feeling calmer and less on edge.

“I’ve lived with anxiety for over 30 years, but my driving anxiety became unmanageable after the pandemic. I couldn’t even look at a motorway without feeling panic. Since working with Ian, I can now drive on highways and feel much more confident on the road. I’m calmer, less overstimulated, and finally feel in control. If you’re struggling with phobias or anxiety, don’t walk, RUN to work with him.”

JANET AVDIU

“600 miles. 4 motorways. Calm, confident — and finally free.”

Before: Avoided motorways for 6 years, relying on A-roads and trains.

After: Drove long journeys with ease, even in bad weather.

“After 6 years of avoiding motorways, I decided enough was enough. I hoped the reviews were genuine, and I’m so glad I trusted them. Since working with Ian, I’ve driven nearly 600 miles over 4 motorways, feeling calm, confident, and in control. No more rerouting through A-roads or relying on trains. I feel free again, and it all worked over Zoom. Don’t hesitate!”

GREG WHITE

Before: Avoided motorways for years, even used Google Maps to plan routes around them.

After: Confidently drove long-distance on the M4 and M40 within weeks.

“I’d tried several therapies to overcome my driving anxiety, but nothing stuck. For years, I avoided major roads; I even used the ‘avoid motorways’ tag on Google Maps to plan every journey. But after working with Ian, I’ve now driven the M4 to Bristol and the M40 to Oxford, something I couldn’t imagine six months ago. Even an accident and a car fire didn’t shake me.
